Morland (Morlan) Kent, living about one and half miles south east of town, died Monday afternoon after a lingering illness. He was 69 years old and is survived by his wife and several children. The funeral was held this afternoon at the home at 2 o'clock. Rev. S.K. Fuson officiating, internment in Rowe Cemetery. Source: Rockville Republican, June 9, 1915, Wednesday
Note: Morland's birth and death dates on this gravestone are incorrect as is his wife Ada Ruth Lamb Kent's dates. He was born January 1, 1846, not 1850 as indicated on the stone and died June 7, 1915, not 1918 as indicated.
Several documents including his birth certificate indicate his name as Morlan others Moreland or Morelan, however, Shelby's family always called him Morland as is reflected on the gravestone.
The name Morlan without a "d" on the end came from his mother Rebecca Ashford Kent's sister Elizabeth Ashford who married Stephen Morlan. It was often the case that names were passed down between brothers and sisters' marriages as a sign of respect to close family members.
Take your pick.
