John Henry Diffley was born in 1870 in Kansas. He was the son of Peter Franklin Diffley and Margaret Sutton Diffley. He was raised by his Uncle Thomas Ryan and Aunt Catherine Diffley Ryan after his father died at the age of 28 years. His sister Mary Catherine Diffley Allen was also taken in by Thomas & Catherine. We are not sure way he lived with his Aunt and Uncle instead of his mother. After his fathers sudden death his mother gave birth to his youngest sister Margaret just a week later. We can only guess that he lived with them because she could not take care of three children and work. She later remarried to Charles Wood.

He then married Vell Mont Belle Chase on October 9,1899 in Holton, Jackson County, Kansas. They had three children together. They Were: Edward James Diffley, Margaret E. Diffley Williams and Florence M. Diffley Thurer.
