Arthur A. Pickrell, aged 60 years, known all over central Illinois, died suddenly at 8:30 o'clock yesterday morning at Lincoln while talking to his physician, Dr. Sergent. Mr. Pickrell was seated in a chair beside the doctor and only a slight drop of his head indicated that life was extinct. Mr. Pickrell had not been in the best of health for the past few weeks but was feeling much better yesterday morning. He was entertaining Dr. Sergent, who had just returned from a trip to Kansas. It was while he was jesting with his doctor-friend that he died.
Mr. Pickrell was a member of one of the oldest and most prominent families of Sangamon county. The land upon which the village of Mechanicsburg stands was entered by his father in 1829, and the Pickrell homestead where Arthur A. Pickrell was born Dec. 29, 1856, adjoins the town. Of a family of ten children he is survived only by his sister, Laura Lockridge, of Greencastle, Ind., and his brother, William Pickrell of Phoenix, Ariz. Mrs. George Pasfreed, Sr., of Springfield, was a sister.
After attending the public schools, Mr. Pickrell entered the Illinois Agricultural college at Urbana, remaining there until 1876, when he returned to his home farm at Mechanicsbrug which he conducted until 1897. He then disposed of his farming interests and founded the Bank of Buffalo, at Buffalo, Ill., of which he continued president until his death. In 1908 he retired from the active management of the Bank of Buffalo, and enetered into the administraton of the Scully estate at Lincoln, Ill., and was thus engaged when death claimed him.
Mr. Pickrell married Theodosia Bone, near Springfield, on Dec. 17, 1885. His wife died at Buffalo on Jan. 9, 1899, and they have left surviving them five children: Mrs. L. V. Matthews, of Chicago; Theodosia, Virginia, Mildred and Marian, the four last named being at home at the time of his death.
The funeral services will be held in Lincoln Sunday. The body will be forwarded to Springfield for burial in Oak Ridge cemetery, arriving here Sunday morning and being taken directly to the cemetery.
