Ellen Gilbert Smith, 98 years, eight months and eight days of age, died Saturday, June 19, 1999 in the Knox County Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late John S. and Mahala Black Gilbert, born to them on October 11, 1900 in Blackwater, Laurel County, Kentucky. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker, a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church. On November 11, 1915, she united in marriage to Grover C. Smith Sr., and to this union four daughters and three sons were born. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grover C. Smith Sr., on February 25, 1979; her daughter, Marie Smith Wilson; her son, Grover Smith Jr.; her sisters, Maude Cobb, Ada Gilbert and Nancy Hubbard; her brothers, Samuel Gilbert, James T. Gilbert, William G. Gilbert and Henry C. Gilbert; daughter-in-law, Margaret Smith and son-in-law, George Bradley all preceded her in death. Ellen Gilbert Smith is survived by her daughters, Ora Mae Clark and husband, Rufus of Warren, Mich., Mary A. Bradley of London, and Mahala Edwards and husband, Arnold of Monroe, Ohio; her sons, Ed Smith of Jarvis and Earl G. Smith and wife, Stella of the Tuttle Community; her daughter-in-law, Troyie Smith of Jarvis; her son-in-law, James W. Wilson of London; her 22 grand- children; and 26 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Rose McQueen of Jeffersonville, Ind.; her brother, Tip Gilbert and wife Margaret of Charlestown, Ind.; and her sisters-in-law, Mary Lee Gilbert of New Albany, Ind., Amanda Wolfe of Pennsylvania, Myrtle Tedders of Michigan; and Laura Hicks and Sallie Baker, both of Corbin;
and several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends to mourn her passing. Funeral services for Ellen Gilbert Smith were conducted on Monday, June 21, 1999 at 3 p.m. in the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Chesnut officiating.
Burial followed in the Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Those serving as pallbearers were grandsons of Mrs. Smith. Those serving as honorary pallbearers were friends and neighbors of Mrs. Smith. Hopper Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
