Rode a Mule To California Gold Fields In The Year 1849.
Funeral services for Mrs. Adaline Fordham Wright, 88, were held from the Christian church at La Crosse, Ill., last Monday. Burial was in Pilot Grove cemetery.
Mrs. Wright was born at Gains [sic], Orleans County, New York, June 17, 1837, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eva Coleman, August 29, 1925.
She was married to Thomas G. Wright October 16, 1861, and was the ninth woman of the seventy-five people of her community to make the trip in 1862 to the gold fields of California, where she joined her husband. Mrs. Wright made the entire trip on a mule riding a board saddle and carrying in her arms a babe two months old. Her husband died twenty-nine years ago. Miss Adeline Fordham Wright was born in Gains [sic], New York, Orleans county, June 17, 1837, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eva Coleman, August 29, 1925 at one o'clock making her 88 years, 2 months and 18 days old.
She is the last of her family consisting of two sisters and three brothers to depart for the world beyond.
She was married to Thomas G. Wright, Oct. 16, 1861. Her husband passed away 29 years ago. To this union were born two children, one son Bennett, deceased and a daughter, Mrs. Eva Coleman, who remains to mourn the loss of a mother. She leaves behind her fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The deceased was the ninth woman of seventy-five folks of her community to make the trip in 1862 to the gold fields of California to meet her husband.
She made the trip on a mule, riding a board saddle, carrying in her arms a babe of two months.
When she was 13 years old she obeyed her Savior in christian baptism.
Smoothe the braides of her silken hair,
On her queenly brow, with tender care
Gather the robes in a final fold,
Around the form that will not grow old,
Lay on her bosom, pure as snow,
The fairest, sweetest flowers that grow,
Kiss her and leave her, your heart's delight,
In dreamless peace, she will sleep tonight.
Funeral was held at the LaCrosse Christian church Monday afternoon, August 31, at 1 o'clock and interment in Pilot Grove cemetery.
