Aged 50, Braun was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Paderborn by Pope Paul VI, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Putia in Byzacena on April 18, 1970 from Bishop Friedrich Maria Rintelen, assisted by Bishops Hugo Aufderbeck and Gerhard Schaffran.
Three years later, on July 23, 1973, Bishop Braun was named as Apostolic Administrator of Magdeburg, an office he held until February 12, 1990, when he resigned at 70 years of age, being succeeded by Bishop Leopold Nowak.
Braun passed peacefully away after 55 years of priesthood and 34 of episcopate, on July 17, 2004 aged 84.
