Former member of U.S. Navy. At start of Civil war, he joined the C.S. Navy. He was the only individual in the C.S.N. to be a crew member of both the C.S.S. Virginia in its battle with the U.S.S. Monitor in 1862 and the raider C.S.S. Alabama under Captain Raphael Semmes when she was sunk in June 1864 in the battle with the U.S.S. Kearsarge in the English Channel. After the battle, Sinclair was rescued by an English yacht and taken to England. In the 1890's he wrote a memoir of of his time with Semmes, entitled "Two Years on the Alabama"
