John H. Heriford was born January 22, 1838 at Princeton, Missouri and departed this life October 5, 1928 at the age of 90 years 8 months and 13 days. He grew to manhood in Missouri and was united in marriage to Miss Margaret P. Kelsey Feb. 3, 1858. To this union 5 children were born, 4 daughters and a son. At the age of 23 he volunteered his services to the Union Army during the Civil War. Having gone thru many of the heavy engagements and carried away several wounds from which he suffered during the reminder of his life. At the close of his third year of enlistment he was honorably discharged. He came to Oklahoma in the year of 1892, thus being one of the pioneer settlers, locating near Watonga and making this his home until called by his Master. The Watonga G.A.R. post, known as the Heriford Post was named in his honor. Of this post but a small fragment is left. He united with the Baptist church in early life and held to this faith until the end. There is left to mourn his departure one daughter, Almyra Sutton of Supply, Oklahoma, two brothers, Wm. Heriford, southwest of Watonga and Thomas Heriford of Clarinda, Iowa, five grand children, several great grand children and other relatives and friends. His wife, 3 daughters and son having preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at Watonga Baptist church Monday October 8th at 2 p.m. Remains were laid to rest in Highland cemetery by the side of Amanda Cooper Heriford, his wife in a second marriage. Grover F. Krohn Officiating.

John was married 3 times. He married, 2 FEB 1858, to Margaret P.Kelsey, (1841 -1871 buried in the Covey Cemetery).

Their children were: Almira (~ 1859 -), Alice (~ 1867 -), Naoma ( ~ 1869 - 1871) also in Covey Cemetery, and Thomas E. (~ 1864 - ) (John is shown in 1920 living with his "daughter" "Maude" (~ 1860 - ), but I see no sign of her earlier and suspect this may be another name for Almira).

John next married, 27 FEB 1872, in Half Rock, Mercer Co, MO, Amanda L. Cooper (1845 - 1906), I know of no children from that marriage.

He finally married, 20 JUN 1909, in Watonga, Blair Co, OK, to Clara Trefethen (sp), again no children.
all children were from the marriage to Margaret P. Kelsey
