He was born June 17, 1929, in Beltrees, Ill., to Joseph and Elizabeth (Wendle) Bechtold.
He married the former Margaret Mary Grelle on July 11, 1953. She survives.
A U.S. Army Korean War veteran, he retired from Owens-Illinois Machine Manufacturing in Godfrey after 40 years of service. He was a lifelong member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Beltrees.
In addition to his wife, surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Rich and Linda Bechtold of Jerseyville, Don and Bobbi Bechtold of Godfrey and Denny and Rhonda Bechtold of Jerseyville; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Mark Madson of Grafton; 14 grandchildren; two sisters and their husbands, Helen and Herb Davis and Betty and Ronald Smith; a brother, Tom Bechtold; and a sister-in-law, Rosie Schieb, all of Dow.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerry Bechtold.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Alexander and Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Beltrees. The Rev. William Hembrow will officiate.
Burial, with a graveside service by Jerseyville American Legion Post 492, will follow at St. Michael's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Michael's Cemetery Fund.
