Thelbert Echols

On May 14, 1932 a boy named Thelbert was born in Okay to Samual Marion (Doc) Echols and Alberta Phipps. On October 22, 2008, the Lord called him home.

Thelbert attended Okay School.

He met his high school sweetheart, Betty Tacker and they were united in marriage in May 13, 1950. They had three boys.

He graduated from NSU with a BA degree in 1965. He taught in Walker, Missouri from 1965 to 1969. They then moved to Porter in 1969, where he was the High School Principle from 1969 to 1972. He received his Administrator Degree from TU. He then moved to Okay to be the Okay Elementary School Principal. He then moved up to be the Superintendent until his retirement in 1988, after serving as superintendent for ten years in Okay. He was active in his church until his illness.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father, sisters, Faye Butler and Wilma Zoe Strebel.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, of the home; three sons, Dean and his wife, Lucretia, of Okay, Sam of Texas, Bryan and his wife, Kathleen, of Chouteau; five grandchildren, Jeremy of Ft. Gibson, Deana and her husband, Derek, of Broken Arrow, Steven of Okay, Eskai of Texas, and Jayston of Missouri; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Church of Christ in Wagoner with Budo Perry and Terry Smalling officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Chance Alread, Joe Dunn, Danny Epperson, Keith Scott, Randall Cargill, Vincient Keathley. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Hughes, Ed Lasater, Jim Hancock and Virgel Harris. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
