The son of Michael & Mary Green, he married Catherine unk. ca. 1860, the same year he was a laborer living in Shippensburg, Cumberland County. He stood 5' 6" tall and had black hair, black eyes, and a black complexion.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Carlisle August 29, 1864, as a private with Co. E, 127th U.S. Colored Troops, and promoted to sergeant September 14, 1864. He was hospitalized at Camp William Penn September - December 1864, where he deserted but returned to duty. He was again hospitalized in New Orleans, Louisiana, September 1865 and, on September 30, transferred to DeCamp U.S. Hospital, David's Island, New York City, where he was discharged the service November 4, 1865, to date August 27, 1865. The army charged him $1.60 for lost ordnance.
