He was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Cunningham. He married Polly Jane Curry 6 May 1838 in Mercer County, Kentucky.

Polly Jane inherited a share of 600 acres from her father on Grape Vine Creek in Mercer County, Kentucky, which they sold on May 7, 1845. About three years later they moved to Brown County, Illinois, and shortly after that to the adjoining Adams County. They farmed there until Apr 1871 when they came to Ross Township in Cherokee County, Kansas.

They had one child not linked to this memorial:
1. William Cunningham (1949- ), died young, Mercer County, KY

Jacob and Polly both died in Ross Township and were buried in the Cherokee Cemetery. They share a grave marker, with the inscrition reading "Jacob Cunningham died Apr 15, 1887, Age 61(or 64) years, and Jane died Dec 21, 1875, age 58 years.

Jacob and Polly were my great great great grandparents.

Young Cherokee, April 20, 1877, page 8:
Died -- At the residence of J.A. Curry, three miles south-west of Cherokee, of pneumonia, on Sunday, April 15, 1877, at 2 p.m., Jacob Cunningham, aged 64 years, 2 months, and six days. The deceased came to Kansas about five years ago, and settled on the farm where he died. He leaves a large number of friends to mourn his loss.
