"David Carbiener was born near Bremen, Indiana, September 10, 1877 [sic] and died at his home in Lucas, September 9, 1913, age 55 years, 11 months and 29 days. The cause of his death was heart trouble. The immediate family who survive him, are the wife, Mrs. Katherine Carbiener, a son and daughter, Harrie and Prudence.
"Mr Carbiener lived at the place of his birth until he came to Kansas.
"In 1877 he went to Napersville Illinois to college for one term. After that he attended formal school at Plymouth, Indiana, and on receiving his teacher's certificate returned to his home and taught a fall and spring term of school. He then went to Goshen, Indiana, for another term in college. The winter following this he taught school again. Then followed a year at a business college in Valparaiso, Indiana.
"In 1879 he came to Wilson, Kansas, and taught school two years.
"He then returned to Indiana and taught school another year.
"On June 1, 1882, he was marred to Miss Katherine Berger. To this union two children were born, a son and a daughter. The daughter, Prudence, now Mrs. W. E. Kenney, was born in Indiana in 1884, and the son in 1892 after the family had moved to Lucas.
"In 1884 the family moved to Wilson Kansas, where for the following year Mr. Cabiener was employed, first by W. L. Nesmith and later by the Wilson Milling Co.
"In 1885, he and his half brother, Joseph Walmer started in the mercantile business in Wilson. The new towns north of Wilson appearred [sic] promising and branch stores were started at Paradise and Lucas. In 1887 the Wilson and Paradise branches were closed out and the brothers came to Lucas. It was just previous to this, in 1886, that another brother, Benjamin Carbiener was taken into the firm.
"Mr. Carbiener was always among the foremost in any movement for the betterment of local conditions. He was also active in church matters, being a member of the Evangelibal [sic] church of this place since its organization, and was largely instrumental in it making the success it has.
"His success in life has been the result of untiring energy and good business judgement [sic]. His death is a loss to the community that cannot be estimated.
"He leaves to mourn his loss beside the immediate family three brothers, Benjamin, of Lucas; Peter, of Pueblo, Colorako [sic]; Samuel and a sister, Mrs. Emma Berger, Bremen, Ind. Also four half-brothers, Joseph Walmer, his partner in business, John Ott and John Carbiener of South Bend, Indiana; Daniel Carbiener of Hutchinson, Kansas and a half-sister, Mrs. Saloma Smith of Wilson.
"Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the Evangelical church if all the relatives that expect to be present arrive in time. Rev. C. J. Eiselein will preach the funeral sermon. Interrment [sic] will be made at the Lucas cemetery.
"The remains of the late David Carbiener will lay in state at the home Friday morning from 9 to 12 o'clock. Anyone wishing to view the body may do so between these hours."
