IN MEMORY OF CHARLES O'NEAL --
Shortly after 4:00 in the afternoon on Memorial Day, Charles O'Neal, a faithful saint of our Congregation, was called to his Eternal home! Charles' death came very suddenly and unexpectedly after an illness of only four days!
Charles was born to Oscar and Gladys O'Neal on July 6, 1931, and went to be with his Lord on Friday, May 40, 1969 at the age of 37 years.
Charles' birthplace was in the first parsonage of the Pleasant Prairie Church of God, located only one half mile west of our Church. Ironically, his birthplace and funeral took place on the same quarter of ground.
Charles was not only close to the Church at the time of his birth and death, but his entire lifetime was given in service to God and the Church. When he was a very young boy, Charles gave his heart to God, and dedicated his life to God.
From infancy, Charles faithfully attended the services of the Church, and for 37 years, was not only a member of the Church, but gave himself in service to it in every way possible. In his dedicated service to the Church, he was a member of the Board of Trustees for many years until the time of his death, having served as Chairman for many years. He also served as a member of the Board of Christian Education, member of the Building Committee, Secretary-Treasurer of the Sunday School, Youth Sponsor, Sunday School Teacher, and member of the Building Finance Committee for the Saltillo Mexico Building Project.
Charles' roots were deep in this community, having been born here and having lived all his life here, except the two years in which he served his country in the Armed Forces in the United States and England.
It was in this community that Charles was married. It was to (living wife; Taton), also of this community that Charles was married on February 22, 1957 at Pleasant Prairie Church of God. To this union, God blessed them with two children, (living son), age 9, and (living daughter), age 5. He will be remembered by them as a devoted husband and father.
Charles loved the Community of his birthplace, and served the Community in every way possible through deeds of service, many of which were never noticed, as Charles always wanted to serve in the place of greatest need and one that drew very little attention to himself. At the time of his death he was treasurer of the Haskell County Chapter of the National Farm Organization.
In his service to God, and man, he was observed by all who knew him as one who was faithful to His Master and to his fellow man. He was a real pillar and Cornerstone of the Church. He had a passionate desire in serving the Church. His was a Christ like Spirit. He had a humble spirit throughout life, regardless of positions held. He faithfully served his family, church, community and country. Words from his family and friends that have been used to describe him are: "Dedicated, Dependable, Loyal, Stable, Strong, a Tower, Strength, Leader, Willing, and Eager to help.
Charles is survived by his wife, and two children; his father and mother, Oscar and Gladys O'Neal, one brother, Robert of Kansas City, Mo, and two sisters, Lavon Robertson, Winchester, VA, and (living sister), Wichita, KS.
His family and friends, and all who knew him will miss him -- but through death have been thankful for the contribution he has made in all our lives!
