Came to USA from Devonshire England settling in Franklinton [now Columbus], Franklin County Ohio.
Alledgedly came to America with family friends that were members of the William Parnell family. (No immigration records have been located to verify this, however, The Parnell family immigration was verified in 1832 with no sign of any Shapters on the same ship.
John and Elizabeth's son Philip P Shapter married one of the Parnell women named Martha in 1846.
