He was born in Maryland as was his wife Nancy. Census records indicate the couple moved to this area about 1812. He is the father of Samuel Huff born in Maryland, William Huff, Mahlon Huff, Lavina Huff wife of Joseph Vaughn. John Huff initated a suit for damages from a road being created through his land. In this early Brooke Co. Court record, he is referred to in this manner "John Huff Sr came into court" indicating that he had a son, John Huff(this John Huff is mostly likely the man seen in Fulton Co., Illinois census records and whose decendants lists his place of birth as near Wheeling, WV, also autosomal dna has linked the descendants of this John Huff Jr. with the descendants of William H. Huff with 95% certainty). From census records there may be additional children. These children probably include Nancy Huff wife of John Vaughn( brother to Joseph mentioned above, Benjamin Huff(When John Huff purchased land in 1840, one of the boundries is described as 'the land of Ben Huff'-autosomal dna has matched these 3 lines of Benjamin Huff, Nancy Huff Vaughn and Permillia Huff Mick descendants also) and Permelia "Millie" Huff wife of Andrew Mick of Madison Twp. Columbiana Co Ohio. With the exception of Millie, the rest of the proposed children of John Huff are found living in Illinois in later census records.

Death date list is from date recorded in the Courthouse of Hancock Co., WV, William Huff gave the information. Other microfilm at the courthouse from someone who read the dates on the stone gives Aug. 1862. I think the stone had deteriorated and the date misread. The date listed here is the date in the Hancock Co. Courthouse as given by William H. Huff Sr who states John is his father.

His wife Nancy Huff born in Maryland according to census records maiden name has not be determined yet. There are a lot of erroneous site with the name Cunningham and that original error started with me and I quickly corrected my tree.
