Elizabeth "Lizzie" Emerson was the daughter of Charles and Katie (Divine) Emerson. She grew up in the "Cross Roads" area of southern Jefferson County. She first married Robert Henry Knight/McKnight, and had eight children. Then when she was in her 70's, she married widower John Thomas Payne of Meade County. She said he was the love of her life.
