Nathan was born and raised in Jefferson Co. He was the son of Charles and Katie (Divine) Emmerson. He could barely read and write because his epilepsy frightened the other children at school, and they insisted he stop coming. He spent his life after that secluded at home, in the company of his seven brothers and sisters. He became a patient at the CSH in 1911 because his widowed father had to work, and was afraid to leave him alone, and could no longer handle his ever-worsening epilepsy.
