She taught her Sunday school class as usual on January 4, but became ill and had to go home before preaching service. Monday her condition became worse and she was taken to the hospital.
Daughter of the late James O. Smoak and the late Mrs. Elvirn Kicklighter Smoak, Mrs. Berry was born in Bamberg County and had made her home here for the last 40 years. She was educated in the public schools of South Carolina and was graduated from Winthrop College in the class of 1915.
Mrs. Berry was a teacher in the St. George schools at the time of her death, having taught 32 years. She was a member of the St. George Methodist Church and served on its board of stewards for 21 years, two of which she acted as chairman. She was teacher of the United Workers Bible Class. She was also active in the work of the civic organizations in the community.
Surviving is her husband.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the St. George Methodist Church. The officiating ministers were the Rev. A.C. Holler, the Rev. J. H. martin, and the Rev. Ben F. Broadway. Burial in the St. George cemetery was under the direction of the Bryant Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were: D. D. Walters, Dr. Robert Utsey, L. D. Jones, Joe Patterson, Marion Patrick and Clifford Guzman.
The board of stewards of the Methodist Church served as honorary pallbearers.
