William was born in Harrison Township, Knox County, Ohio to George McGinnis and Mary Ann Faucett. His mother died in 1888 followed by his older brother James in 1890. His father George served in Co A of the 3rd NY Infantry. George became ill and was sent to the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Sandusky, Ohio where he died Aug of 1891. I'm not sure when William was transferred to the Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Orphanage. His death record says he died of Gripe on Christmas Day of 1891 at the age of 12. William was survived by sisters Luella McGinnis and Sarah Jane McGinnis. Sarah was adopted by John S Miller and his family.
It is also worth noting that William's grandfather James S Maginnis also served in the Civil War Co E Connecticut 15th Infantry Regiment. He was taking prisoner April of 1864 and died at Andersonville, GA prison camp in Aug 17, 1864.
