You will find John's name spelled at least three different ways; John Bain, in his land grant, John Bean, when appointed Constable and John Bane, on his tombstone. Other family members are buried near the old homestead at Windsor Heights, Brooke County, West Virginia and their stones are marked Bane. (Proof of John's military or patriotic service in the Revolutionary War has not been found)
One reason I posted a photo of his tombstone here, is that different sources quote DIFFERENT transcriptions for his tombstone.
He had four sons Hugh, b: 1781, John Jr, b: 1786 or 1788, Robert, b: 1791, and Daniel who went to Calif. and we lost track of.
Some sources mention a dau. Mary, b: 1794 and she married Robert Davidson, c1816. In 1835, they left Brooke Co., VA and moved to Morgan Co., IL with Hugh Bane and his family.
Early in 1836, Robert Davidson bought some land which turned out to be less than was advertized. So, he filed suit against Isaham Reevis and hired Abraham Lincoln to produce evidence the land was "no good". Abe's hand written document was found in the county records in the late 1900's. The court ruled against Davidson.
Sources tell conflicting accounts regarding a dau. named Margaret, b: 1747. The Taylor History says Yes, but the MacBean history says no. Another family history, "John Bane of Short Creek, WV", that I was given a copy of has no mention of any daughters ?
A daughter Margaret, b: 1784, d: 1836 She m. 17 Mar 1808, at Brooke County, VA, to William Smith, and with him, had six or seven children. Both are buried at Seder Cem., Jefferson Co., OH.
There is no doubt John Bane was a pioneer settler of the Virginia wilderness. Please contact me if you are a family member or have addition information regarding this family.
I'm searching for research papers of James E. Bane of Hopedale, OH and hope to aquire the papers of Frank J Bane of Baltimore, from WVU.
2015: I did find a record of a John Bane married to a Margaret Reid, in Glasgow City, Lanark, 24 Feb 1765 ? I searched electronically from 1750 - 1770.
