Mrs. Maude Burrowes Alden, 78, a resident of Massena since her marriage, died Friday morning, May 25, 1962, after being in declining health for several years.
She resided at 8 Cherry Street.
Mrs. Alden was born August 8, 1883, in Canton, a daughter of Michael and Harriet Foster Burrowes. She was graduated from Canton High School and was married to Roy W.E. Alden, a descendant of early families in Massena, on August 25, 1909, with the Rev. H.W. Markum performing the cerempony in Canton Methodist Church.
They came to the Alden homestead just below the St. Lawrence Plant on the Middle Road, and operated the farm until the property was purchased by the Defense Plants Corporation to build the Plancor Plant, as it was then called, 1941. His grandfather, William Alden, had settled there in an early day. The family can trace their ancestry back to John Alden.
Mr. Alden then worked at the aluminum plant until he reached retirement age. He died suddenly June 3, 1955, while driving his car near the intersection off Bridges Avenue and Allen Street.
Mr. and Mrs. Alden were always prominent in the work of the First Methodist Church. For years he was a member of the official board. She was active in the Bethany Class and the Women's Society of Christian Service. Mrs. Alden has been a member of the local church since 1919.
While operating the farm, Mr. and Mrs. Alden kept the property in excellent shape, the buildings painted, the lawn mowed. It was one of the neatest farm properties in the area. Mr. and Mrs. Alden were thrifty and prosperous farmers, had a good dairy, drove a large sedan, were active in farm organizations.
Surviving are the one daughter, Mrs. Edwin (Dorothy) Atwater, 8 Cherry Street; three grandchildren.
