Daniel was the son of Martha Huttenstine and Joseph Eckrote. He married Katie Warner in 1888 and they had eleven children: Henry, Sarah, Calvin Elwood, Anna Elizabeth, George Washington, Lloyd Edwin, Melvin James, Clarence A., Martha Mae, Ruth V., and Estella Arlene. Daniel worked as a blacksmith in his early years, and later worked as a farmer.
