Calvin was the third of eleven children, and the first one to survive childhood. He married Martha Hoffman in 1911, and the couple raised two sons: Elwood and Daniel. In his younger days, he worked for the G. B. Markle Company in Jeddo, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, as a car repairer. He was employed by the Jeddo-Highland Coal Company at the Highland #5 Colliery from the 1920s until he retired in 1957.
