John Ahshing, 63, Lengby, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, in First Care Medical Services Hospital, Fosston.

John Ashing Jr. was born June 22, 1938, the son of John Ashing Sr. and Elsie Portz, on White Earth Reservation. He later corrected his last name to reflect the translation of the name his grandfather used. He went to school at the church and in Fosston. He served in the U.S. Navy, and was stationed in San Diego as a Beach Jumper Unit 1 UDT. He married Joyce Crowe. He received a bachelor's degree in transportation from Mira Mesa College, San Diego. He worked for several trucking companies in San Diego, and rose to foreman of the Pacific Transfer trucking company. In 1985, he returned to White Earth Reservation.

He is survived by daughters, Cindy (Mike) Thorpe, Ridgecrest, Calif., and Darlene (Richard) Goodbody, San Diego; a son, Robert (Kathy), San Diego; three grandchildren; sisters, Beatrice King, Lengby, Ethel Keim, Oaskis, Minn., Ann Coyer, Bagley, Minn., and Kathy Johnson, New Brighton, Minn.; and a brother, Leonard Ashing, Lengby.

He was preceded in death by brothers.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Pine Bend Methodist Mission, Lengby.

Visitation: Begins at 5 p.m. Friday, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, in the mission.

Burial: Pine Bend Cemetery (Anderson, Mahnomen, Minn.).
