“Bernard Burke, Brother of Local Area Residents, Dies”
Bernard Burke, 56, of Farmersville, formerly of Kincaid, died at 8:07 a.m. Monday, February 10, 1975, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
Mr. Burke was born April 11, 1918 in Kincaid, the son of Michael and Ada Alice (Manuel) Burke. He married Mary G. Bible on January 30, 1937 in Taylorville. Mr. Burke worked as mine superintendent of Crown Coal Mine #1 in Farmersville for 13 years, retiring in 1971. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1945. Mr. Burke was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kincaid. He was also a member of American Legion Post #443 in Farmersville.
Surviving are his wife, Mary; one daughter, Mrs. Paul (Alice) Bogan of Springfield; two sons, Charles “Butch” (wife, Linda) Burke of Pawnee and Bernard “Jake” (wife, Judy) Burke of Farmersville; three sisters, Mrs. Clifford (Margaret) Freeman of Port Richey, Florida, Ms Betty Borgognoni of Kincaid and Ms. Patricia Grace of Herrin; four brothers, Patrick (wife, Margaret) Burke of Kincaid, Charles (wife, Jean) Burke of Taylorville, Joseph William (wife, Lois) Burke of Farmersville and Robert (wife, Roberta) Burke of Joliet; one half-brother, Michael Sr. (wife, Mary) Burke of Backworth, England; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John Burke and James Burke; and one half-brother, James Burke.
Funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 12, 1975, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Farmersville. Father Charles Olshefsky officiated, with burial following at St. Martin’s Cemetery in Farmersville. Murphy Funeral Home, in Farmersville, was in charge of arrangements.
