The Rev. Barber L. Waters, former pastor of the Massena Methodist Church and now superintendent of the Black River-Ontario District, was in charge of the services. He was assisted by the Rev. David H. Sandstrom, pastor of Emmanuel Congregational Church, and the Rev. A. Leslie Potter, present pastor of the local Methodist Church. Burial was made in the family lot in Pine Grove Cemetery.

Attorney Chase passed away at his home at 4:30 Monday afternoon. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage last week Wednesday night. His condition was critical but he rallied. He suffered the second stroke Monday morning. His devoted family were at his bedside during his last illness.
Attorney Chase would have reached his 75th birthday July 27. He was a son of Clark E. and Ann O. Brewer Chase and was born on the Chase farm on the Racket River-Rooseveltown Highway. His maternal and paternal grandparents were among the early settlers of the township of Massena.
He attended the old Massena High School and was graduated from Potsdam Normal in 1896. He taught in this township for one year and then enrolled in Cornell University. At the end of the first year he transferred to the New York Law School in New York City and was graduated in 1899 and was admitted to the bar.
Attorney Chase returned to Massena and he and his brother, H. Benjamin Chase, who died in 1932, established the law firm of Chase and Chase, in June 1899. This partnership continued for a number of years.
For 28 years, or from 1903 to 1931, Attorney Chase was a justice of the peace of the township of Massena. In those years the town board consisted of the supervisor and four justices of the peace.
In 1927 the village created the office of police justice and appointed Attorney Chase to that position. He lost to John W. Whalen in the 1928 election.
He was appointed United States Commissioner for this district in 1923 and served throughout the prohibition era. In full sympathy with the law, he believed in strict enforcement and meted out penalties accordingly.
Mr. Chase was a member of Massena Lodge 513 F. and A. M.; a charter member of the Massena Chapter 300 R.A.M. and also a charter member of Massena Commandery 72. K.T. He was a life member of Media Temple. For a great many years he has been a member of St. Lawrence Lodge 882, IOOF. He was the first Boy Scout chairman in Massena. He was a charter member of the Massena Country Club. He belonged to the Massena Lions Club.
He and Miss Rhoda Beeman of Helena were married in 1899. She died Feb. 20, 1901.
On Dec. 27, 1905 he married Miss Edith Hall of Canisteo. She was a teacher in the local schools for several years.
Surviving are his wife: three sons, Giles Elihu Chase, Massena, Lester Hall Chase, Glen Cove, L.I., and William U. Chase, at home; four daughters, Mrs. Charles (Mildred) Jessop, Dundee, N.Y., Mrs. William (Annette) Saunders, New York City, Mrs. John (Irene) Angus and Miss Virginia Chase, both of Rochester; two brothers, Charles Chase, Madrid, and Alonzo H. Chase, Massena.
Two of the sons are attorneys; Giles Elihu Chase was admitted to the bar in 1936 and is practicing in Massena, and Lester Hall Chase was admitted in 1939. Both were commissioned officers and saw overseas duty in World War 2.
