Jacob Neese was born at Leatherwood, Clarion Co. Pa. Jacob was the oldest of 11 children born to John Neese Sr b 1795, and Catherine Shuman Neese 1797-1885, he was a child when the family moved to Red Bank Township, where he received a common school education. He worked for his father on the farm.

Jacob was 21 years old when he went to Forest County, where he continued to work with his father until he went into the service during the Civil War.

On August 21, 1861 Jacob married Susanna Emery 1844 - 1933

On Aug 28, 1861 Jacob enlisted from Armstrong County in Company G, 105th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, under Captain Freas, and was mustered in at Pittsburgh for three years service in the Civil War. This regiment, which was attached to the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 3rd Corps, Army of the Potomac, was commanded by Co. A.A. McKnight until his death.

Mr Neese took part with his regiment in the following engagements:
Yorktown Apr 5-May 2, 1862;
Williamsburg, May 5, 1862;
Fair Oaks, May 31, 1862;
White Oak Swamp, June 30, 1862;
Malvern Hill, July 1, 1862;
Bristoe Station, Aug 22, 1862;
Second Bull Run, Aug 30, 1862;
Fredericksburg, Dec 13, 1862;
Chancellorsville, May 1-4, 1863;
Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863;
Auburn, Kelly's Ford, Nov 7, 1863;
Mine Run Dec, 1863;
Wilderness, May 5-7, 1864.

On May 6th he was injured, receiving a gunshot wound on the right side of his head and he was sent to a hospital in Washington, D. C. where he remained for ten days. Thence he was sent to Baltimore, Md., for two weeks, and from there to York, Pa, for a short time, until able to rejoin his regiment at Pittsburgh, at which place he was honorably discharged, Aug 28, 1864.

During his service Mr Neese was captured twice and was home twice on furlough.

Jacob bought a farm of 30 acres in Forest County and after the war he bought a tract of 73 acres, adding to his possessions as he prospered until he owned 200 acres.

He was actively engaged in general farming until his death, which occurred Nov 5, 1910, and he is buried in the Eddyville Cemetery.

He was a useful citizen of his locality, serving a number of terms as supervisor, and was a prominent member of the McWilliams United Evangelical Church in Red Bank township, serving as treasurer of both Church and Sunday school. Politically he was a Republican.

The farm was divided among the children upon the father's death, Silas I. receiving the homestead.

Obit:
Jacob Neese, a Civil War veteran of near McWilliams, this county (Armstrong) died Friday, November 4, 1910 of paralaysis. He was born September 10, 1835 and was therefore in his 75th year. During the war Mr. Neese was a member of the 105th Regt. Penna. Vols. and served three years. He was wounded in the Battle of the Wilderness, a bullet striking him in the side of the head.

He was a kind and indulgent father and during his lifetime provided a home for each of his children.

The children are Mrs. Anna Wampler, William Park, Robert Earl, Mary C. Smith and Silas J., who receiving the old homestead is to provide for the widow during her lifetime. Deceased was a member of the Evangelical church for 38 years and was a faithful church attendant. He was a man of good sound judgment and a neighbor who shared the respect of all in the community in which he lived.

The interment was in the Eddyville cemetery, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. Samuel Milliron and the old soldiers had charge at the grave.

NEESE - Jacob Neese was born Sept. 10, 1836 and died of paralysis, near McWilliams, Pa., Nov. 5, 1910, aged 74 y 3 m and 25 d. He was a member of our church for nearly 38 years. He will be missed not only in home, but as well in the church and community. Father Neese served his country 3 years during the Civil War suffering from wounds and hardships common to a soldier's life. Almost 59 years ago he was joined in matrimony to Susanna Emery, who survives him. Three sons, 2 daughters, 21 grandchildren, 2 brothers, 2 sisters and many relatives and friends mourn his departure.
