His name has also been spelled Matthias Brakeley. He was born about 1730. He married Anna Barbara Schafer and had two children, George and Catharine, married to George Pickle.

Mathias was involved in Straw Church and records show he was elected an elder there on Jan. 14, 1789.

According to the "Chronicles Of The Brakeley Family, of Lopatcong" by George Brakeley White, the following was written:

The recollections of the aged, to which I listened in my boyhood, describe him as of medium height and spare build and of a kindly mein. His voice was low and his manners gentle and winning. His face was clean shaven and abundant snow white hair gave him a venerable appearance above his years. A short time before his death he removed to Alexandria Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, where his son resided. He died there August 19th, 1796.

According to the above chronicles, his wife married Phillip Fine after his death. She died in 1816 and is buried in an unmarked grave next to Mathias.
