Daniel Whitehouse was born in 1760 in Somersworth, New Hampshire. He married as her 2nd husband Martha Woodsum the widow of James Roberts. They were married in Berwick Maine. She was quite a bit older than he-about 15 years. They moved to South Vassalboro when they were old. He and Martha were the parents of 5 children.

He served in the Revolutionary Army in Colonel Poor's Regiment & received a pension. The pension papers can be viewed on Fold3. Those papers reveal that he was uneducated and could not read or write. He is poor and only owns a cow, an axe and a hoe and some knives and forks. His wife is infirm and unable to work. His deposition in 1818 says he is 62 and his wife, Patty is 72. He says he fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill

The gravestone indicates that he was 80 years old when he died in 1835. This would put his birthdate at about 1755. However there is no birth record for Daniel at that time. "The Diary of Master Joseph Tate of Somersworth, NH" records the birth of a Daniel Whitehouse 12 July 1760, son of Thomas & Elizabeth (Gooding) Whitehouse. See Maine Families in 1790 page 301
Comments on his age, by researcher Leslie Vaughn: his wife had been married before he married her & she had several children. She was at least 10 years older than he. In 1818 he lists his age as 62 which would put his birth date about 1755. His tombstone puts his birthdate about 1755, her tombstone puts her birth date abput 1745. It could be that he was the child referred to by school master Joseph Tate in his diary born in 1760. It appears to me that his age was exaggerated during his lifetime to show that his wife wasn't 15 years older than he--a review of Master Tate's diary in Somersworth & the Berwicks show no other child that could have fit. His diary does seem extensive & would have showed another Daniel Whitehouse. Another indicator that Daniel is the son of Thomas is a biography of William Penn Whitehouse, Supreme Court Judge of the State of Maine, shows his Whitehouse lineage. This lineage says that Daniel's father was Thomas and that Thomas' father was Pomfret.
