Sister Bernice A. Krejci, S.S.N.D., 78, of Chippewa Falls died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
It was on Feb. 6, 1930, that the Krejci family welcomed the sixth new arrival to their farm home in Howard. Her parents, John Krejci and Mathilda Zwiefelhofer, both German Catholics, gave her the name Bernice Ann when she was baptized at St. Peter's Church in Tilden three days after her birth. In all, the children numbered 10; but God chose to take three boys and one girl from the family in infancy. When yet a child, she moved to a farm in Tilden, where she attended the district school for two years. For the third year she stayed with her aunt and attended St. Charles School in Chippewa Falls. It was there on Dec. 8, 1939, she received her first Holy Communion. For the next four years she was back attending the district school. St. John's Parochial School in Cooks Valley was the scene of her graduation after a fruitful year there. She spent the next two years at home helping with the work on the farm. It was on Aug. 28, 1946, that she entered the Candidature and chose to become another "Martha." After one year of Candidature in the Motherhouse, and then the following August found her at St. Alphonsus, Chicago, where she was a homemaker. On Aug. 10 a class of 34 received the habit of Notre Dame with her given name - Sister Mary Christopher.
Her assignments were to St. Aloysius, Arcadia. Then she went to St. Aloysius, West Allis. She was a hospice volunteer for St. Joseph's Hospital, head of Transitus House in Chippewa Falls, a traveling seamstress for the School Sisters of Notre Dame and was a member of Holy Ghost Church.
She is survived by one brother, Roman (Marge) Krejci, of Bloomer; two sisters, Edna Gindt of Holcombe and Evelyn (Henry) Schemenauer of Chippewa Falls; and several friends; and the community of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, John, Bernard in infancy and Herbert Krejci; and three sisters, Winifred Krejci in infancy and Marie Anderson and Delores Sarauer.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at Holy Ghost Church, Chippewa Falls. The Rev. Arul Joseph will be celebrant of the funeral Mass. Interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Chippewa Falls.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, and until 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Horan Funeral Home in Chippewa Falls. There will be a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Christian vigil service at 6:30 p.m., both on Friday at the funeral home.
