Melvin was the tenth child of eleven born to Charles Edwin Hughey and Constance Caroline Ardley Blenkarn. He married, divorced, and had no children. According to this Source: "Blenkarn Tapestry" by Dorothy L. Taylor pg 187, "History: I wrote to Melvin A. Hughey a number of years ago before I got the following letter from a neighbor lady in 1982: 'Melvin A. Hughey brought me your [the author, Dorothy L. Taylor] letter last Thursday and asked me to answer it. He is 90% blind and cannot see to write except to sign his checks. I have no idea how long he has had your letter and hope it is not too late for your book. He is not married, nor does he have any children. He is retired. Mr. Hughey was born in Oswego, Kansas. He lives alone and often talks of a Lord Ardley Blenkarn in England, who came over here and invested money in steel, copper, oil, etc. He said his mother never received her share. I do not know, if this is so or not, but he tells me, the mailman, etc. If he gets his money from his old inheritance, he will go back to Hawaii. His mother died while he was in the Army in 1944. I think that is when he caught his wife with another man. He never remarried. After getting out of the Army he played the bass drum with the Grand Old Opery and various taverns. I am enclosing a picture taken two years ago. He sent Glenn [Hughey] his picture taken in Hawaii last November." s/ Mrs. M. Stevenson.'

The following letter came from Joyce, a niece of Melvin's, 'September 26, 1987, Just a brief note to let you know that Uncle Mel Hughey died on Thursday the 24th of Sept. He was 81 years old. I got a phone call Thursday evening from the V.A. Hospital in Tennessee where he had been since his stroke on Sep 9th. Before that, he had been in a nursing home for about three years. He will be buried in the National Cemetery in Memphis on Monday with a simple graveside service provided by the American Legion and the V.A. His friend of many years, Millie Stevenson, has been kind enough to make all the arrangements and take care of his final affairs. Millie tells me that during the last four or five years that she know Mel, he was very happy and had given up drinking. She was very fond of him and was even able to persuade him to go with her to church. According to Millie, Mel talked often about his many nieces and nephews and wanted them to know that he was getting good care.'"
