Son of Sarah "Sally" McAfee Bird (1799-1869) and Thomas Ross McKim (1800-1873; cabinetmaker who fell from a flatboat and drowned in the Arkansas River and was buried on the river bank at Arkansas Post, AR; has a memorial stone in Eckart Cemetery, Central, Harrison Co., IN); siblings: Elizabeth (1824-1888), William W. (1825-1899), Mary "Polly" (b. 1827), Thomas Ross, Jr. (1830-1913), Christina (1832-1851; fell and fractured skull while ice skating on a pond near home), Robert (1833-1917; Co. E, 81ST IND INF), and Aaron Patrick (b. 1834); family lived in District 45, Harrison Co., IN at the time of the 1850 U.S. Census; farm laborer on the Belitha & Elizabeth Thompson farm in Boone Twp., Harrison Co., IN in 1860;

George McKim enlisted in Co. E, 38th Indiana Infantry on Sept. 18, 1861. He was listed sick at Bowling Green, KY on a company muster roll dated Nov. 9, 1862. He died at Bowling Green on Jan. 19, 1863.
