Mae Layne Coffey, 88, passed away peacefully at her home in Eagle Rock, Va., on Tuesday, December 9, 2008, surrounded by her beloved children. Born on May 9, 1920, Mae was 88 years old and is survived by her 10 children, Shirley Siler and husband, Harry "Bud," of Natural Bridge, Floyd Coffey and wife, Helen, of Eagle Rock, Joyce Hylton and husband, Alton, of Eagle Rock, Alton Coffey and wife, Patricia, of Blue Ridge, Carter Coffey, of Boones Mill, Brenda Coffey, of Eagle Rock, Wanda Simpson, of Ashland, Gail Moody, of Ashland, Dennis Coffey and wife, Becky, of Eagle Rock, and Debra Thomas, of Roanoke. Mae has 23 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren (one deceased); and four greatgreat-grandchildren. Mae is survived by four sisters, Mary Wright, Dorothy Bradner, Grace Vess, and Virginia Nicely. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors who loved her dearly.
Mae was predeceased by her loving husband of 68 years, Alfred R. Coffey; her father and mother, Joshua William Layne and Fannie Sweet Layne; Mae's sisters, Nellie Layne and Ella Sweet; and brothers, George, Buck, Joe, Tom, and Billy Layne.
Mae's commitment to her husband and family was the heart of her life. She and her husband, Alfred, taught their 10 children the importance of love, family, the value of good work ethic and above all, belief in God. She was a member of Springwood Baptist Church for over 50 years and later at Mt. Carmel Church. She and Alfred made sure that each and every child was brought up in the church. One of the most special gifts Mom gave us was the value of family and her unconditional love this she taught each of us through her years of dedication to her family.
She adored her children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and great-greatgrandchildren and they all adored her. To the very end, her eyes danced when the children entered the room. Mae's joy and happiness in life was felt by all who met her or entered her home. She made everyone feel welcome with her sweet and precious spirit. She took great pride in her home and her excellent cooking was enjoyed not only by her family, but by many, many neighbors and friends.
Mae felt a great commitment to St. Jude Children's Hospital and gave generously. The family is indebted to the Eagle Rock Rescue Squad volunteers who have shown such consideration and compassion to our Mother in her time of need. The family requests in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in honor of Mae Coffey to either St. Jude Children's Hospital or Eagle Rock Rescue Squad. The family also wishes to express their appreciation and gratitude to Gentle Shepherd Hospice, and especially, Macky Anderson, for the care of our Mother and support of our family.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2008, at Springwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Ronk and the Rev. Brian Clingenpeel officiating. Interment will follow in Springwood Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 12, 2008, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan, Va., 540-254-3000.
