He was born Dec. 15, 1980, in Antler, Okla., to Harold and Gina (Broderson) Yates.
Derek had a hard childhood. He beat the odds for many years. He was always a happy little boy and never complained about anything. He was a member of the Church of Christ and loved to ride around in his wheelchair and in a vehicle. His favorite toy was a spoon. He loved being around other kids, and Derek was loved by all.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Claude Yates, Tomi Jean (Yates) Fields, Sylvester Broderson and Louise (Broderson) Taylor; and an uncle, Richard Broderson.
Survivors include his parents, Harold and Gina Yates of the home; many aunts, uncles and cousins; special caregiver, Judy Cline.
Service will be 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at Cooper Funeral Chapel with Riley Donica officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery .
