John was the fifth of eleven children. In 1876 he married Emeline Phile and the couple had nine children: Clara, Harrison, William, Ida, Clarence, Grace, Carrie, and two other children who died as infants. He worked as a laborer at a rolling mill.

Research Note: Though the tombstone, obituary, and death certificate all list his birth date as 18 Dec 1858, these documents were all created at about the same time, and long after his birth. The date is correct, but one year off. The 1860 census lists his age as 8/12 (8 months). Though census records often list incorrect ages, it is less likely that the census record for an infant is off by one year than it is that the death certificate is off by one year.
