Lawrence was the sixth of twelve children. He was employed by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad shops for more than 30 years, initially as a yard clerk and later as a car inspector. He married Myrtle Jones in 1911 and they raised two children: Miriam and Ronald.
