As long as I can think back (actually much longer than that), Grete has been one of my mother's closest friends, buddies and confidents, they had a lot of fun together when they were young and bore the hardship of Mum's illness more or less in a joint effort to see her through the worst pain.
Since our houses are only a few metres away, the friendship with her and also her daughter Gitta who is one year my junior kept on even after Mum's death.
In October, Grete was in hospital and was then diagnosed with cancer. I remember I brought her a large printout of my favourite photo of herself and my mother for her 75th birthday, she proudly showed it to all the nurses and other patients.
Grete was dismissed home after another 2 weeks in hospital, but before the actual chemo therapy could have begun, God kindly had her taken home, she died peacefully in her sleep.
I shall never forget her, nor will anybody whose life she has touched.
Grete will be buried on Friday, December 19, on the Alter Friedhof in Gummersbach.
