MALONE— Meda Glisson Williams, 92, of Vidalia, Ga., a former prominent Malone businesswoman, church and community leader, died at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, in Vidalia after a lengthy illness.
Born in Metcalf, Ga., she had lived most of her life in Malone. She was the widow of the late Roland T. Williams. After his death in 1932, she became the owner and operator of Malone Cotton Gin Co. while also rearing five children singlehandedly.
A church pianist for 65 years, she also taught piano to many students and freely gave of her time and talents through playing the piano for countless weddings and funerals.
A former schoolteacher, "Miss Meda," as she was affectionately called, was an ardent supporter of schools and educational activities. She served on the school board at Malone and was one of the founders of the Malone School Board, having helped sew the first band uniform.
She held offices in the PTA, was a member of the Malone Baptist Church, and was secretary of the Malone Women's Missionary Society for 25 years.
Survivors include: one son, Truett of Vidalia; two daughters, Marilyn Hicks of Plant City and Elaine McDonald of Deltona; 18 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the First Baptist Church of Malone with the Rev. Joe L. Kiser officiating. Burial will follow in Friendship Cemetery near Malone with Maddox Chapel of Marianna directing.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
