Virginia Elizabeth Nicholson, formerly of Brunswick, died peacefully of pneumonia in Winter Park, Florida. She was 96 years old.
She was born in Frederick County on Sept. 17, 1912, to the late Louis Elmer Frye and Annie Gertrude Snoots. She was the wife of James Edward Nicholson, who died in 1974. She graduated from Brunswick High School in 1930 and attended Strayer Business College in Washington, D.C.
Mrs. Nicholson was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Frederick.
For many years, she and her husband owned and operated Nicholson's Service Center in Petersville. Later they moved to Feagaville. She and her husband belonged to the Brunswick Moose Lodge, active with the Brunswick Fire Hall, belonged to the Woodsboro Dance Club and attended many dances. They were known as the "old smoothies."
Mrs. Nicholson lived with her daughter in Florida for several years and enjoyed going to dances where her daughter sang and her husband were members of an 18 piece big band, just as they were when they lived in Frederick. After a stroke, she went to live at Village Oaks of Tuscawilla, an assisted living facility in Winter Springs, Fla. She remained active there, while participating in many activities. Her sense of humor often kept the residents and staff laughing and they fondly nicknamed her "peanut."
Mrs. Nicholson was very active with the Women of the Moose, Chapter 347 in Frederick where she served as musician. Moving to Florida, she became active with the Women of the Moose, Chapter 1404, in Sanford, Fla. where she also served as musician. Later in life, she had a very dear friend, Louis Wynkoop, who was also active with the Moose Lodge in Sanford. He passed away in 1998.
Mrs. Nicholson is survived by her daughter, Connie Twigg Silliman and son-in-law, Dr. Thomas E. Silliman Sr.; grandson, Troy E. Twigg and wife, Jill; two great - grandchildren; niece, Bonnie Spann and husband, Jim, and their two children.
Also surviving is ex-son-in-law, Charles Ronald Twigg, fondly remembered by Mrs. Nicholson. Dr. Silliman's children, considered as her extended family, are Dr. Thomas Jr., Barry and Gregory Silliman and Gail N. Snyder.
Mrs. Nicholson was preceded in death by her brother, Leslie Frye of Knoxville in 1985.
