For 45 years Church of Scotland Minister in Venice. He was a friend of Ezra Pound and helped to print his first volume of poems, in Venice in 1908. Pound later wrote about him in Canto LXXVI. He was first married to Helen Mitchell Stevenson. His second wife was Julia Dawson. They married 30 September 1885 in Berne, Switzerland.
