Born in Santiago, Chile, on January 26, 1925, Gabriel Larraín Valdivieso was ordained to the priesthood at 25 years of age on December 23, 1950, and was appointed as Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Santiago de Chile by Pope Paul VI, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Theudalis on November 3, 1966, from Cardinal Raúl Silva Henríquez, assisted by Archbishop Alberto Rencoret Donoso and Bishop Enrique Alvear Urrutia. Prior to his Episcopal Nomination, Larraín Valdivieso served as diocesan and National Assessor for the Juventud Obrera Católica, rector of the Pontifical Seminary of Santiago, vicar general of the Archdiocese and director of the Misión General de Santiago.

He resigned however his office in less than two years, leaving the priesthood for secular humanitarian works on January 19, 1968. In 1975, he also resigned his Titular See. Along the years, he served as pastoral vice-rector of the Colegio Politécnico San Esteban Mártir, of Lo Barnechea, founded by Rev. Luis Antonio Díaz in 1988, and worked within the Instituto de Educación Rural.

Whilst lying in state at the chapel of the Colegio Politécnico, following his demise which occurred on Saturday, December 20, 2008, at 83 years of age, the Cardinal Archbishop of Santiago de Chile, Francisco Javier Errázuriz Ossa, visited the chapel in order to pay his respects. Funeral Mass was celebrated at the parish church of Santa Rosa de Lo Barnechea, followed by interment inside the Cementerio Católico, on Monday, December 22.
