---Adjutant General's Report, Roster of 81st New York Volunteer Infantry (via New York Military Museum website)
Pvt James Dynes, 21, born in the US, died of cerebral congestion, according to the bound inked burial register for Alexandria National Cemetery (via Ancestry). His place of death was Soldiers Rest. "Soldiers Rest, on Duke near West Street, was built near the Orange and Alexandria Rail Road Depot to provide a rest for soldiers traveling through Alexandria by train. The complex was used as a hospital in 1864" (City of Alexandria website).
The year of death was certainly 1864, as recorded in the burial register as well as Register of Deaths of Volunteers, New York C-D (via Ancestry); New York Civil War Muster Roll Abstracts (via Ancestry); the Quartermaster General's Roll of Honor, v IV (via Hathitrust); and his interment control form (via Ancestry). The regimental roster in the New York Adjutant General's report, published much later, errs in showing the year of death as 1865.
The roster cites Fulton as Pvt Dynes's place of enlistment. The burial register lists Fulton, New York, as his place of residence. Given that the 81st Regiment mainly recruited in Oswego and Oneida Counties, this probably refers to the Fulton in Oswego County.
Before the war: possibilities
It is possible, but far from proven, that Pvt Dynes was a member of a family found in the 1850 and 1860 US Censuses, as well as the 1855 New York State Census, in Volney, Oswego County. In 1850, a Robert and Charlott Dyne, of England, have children James W, Robert N, Oscar A, and Thomas, all born in New York. In 1855, Robert and Charlott Dynes have children James W, Norwood R, Osker A, and Thomas H. In 1860, Robert and Charlott Dennis have children James, Norman, Oscar, Thomas, Maryann, and Rosilla. Based on ages recorded in these three censuses, the James in this family was born around 1841 or 1842, consistent with Pvt Dynes's age at enlistment (age 20 in 1861). Further research is needed to determine whether or not this is Pvt Dynes's family.
