He worked on his father's farm and helped with the stock. He loved to hunt and was given the job of keeping the squirrels out of the fields. In 1829 the family moved to Edgar County, Illinois , where James married Sarah . While here, he heard the gospel preached. When he told his father and brothers, his father told him that it was true. His father, mother, brother, and three sisters joined with him in being baptized. After the death of his wife, Sarah , James took his daughter and rode to Hancock County, Illinois , where he married for the second time. They lived on a farm 25 miles from Nauvoo . After the martyrdom, the persecution was so bad he sold his farm and joined the saints in their trek west. They stayed at Council Bluffs for two years to raise crops for the influx of saints. He couldn't go with the Mormon Battalion because he cut his foot with an ax. Here he married his third wife. They apparently lived in Kanesville as some of the children were born there. After their arrival in the Valley, they spent the first winter in a one room pole house with both families living there. The next spring they moved to Little Cottonwood , now Murray . In 1851 , they moved to American Fork where they farmed a large area. In 1852 , they moved to Springville where he laid out another farm. In 1854 , they moved to Parowan and traded their Springville farm for one in Parowan . James played an active part in the settlement and building up of this town. He helped all who needed help. He kept a small tavern where travelers could obtain food and supplies. After 12 years, he was released from his mission of settling the areas and he moved his family to Fountain Green in 1864 .
