Otto Von Grieff enlisted on April 23rd, 1861 at New York City, New York for two years of service. Otto was twenty-one and mustered into service as a Private in Company F of the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Hawkins Zouaves on May 4th, 1861 in New York City, New York. He served with the regiment in Virginia and North Carolina and was promoted to the rank of Corporal in 1862. He was killed in action on April 19th, 1862 in the Battle of South Mills near Camden, North Carolina.
