George B. M. TOWNER*, born in Willsboro, New York, May 12, 1861; son of Charles and Margaret (MC GHEE) TOWNER.

Charles TOWNER, born in Willsboro, New York, in September 1816. He served as the 3rd postmaster of Willsboro, and engaged in farming in Essex County, New York, where he died in 1890. His great grandfather, Zachary TOWNER, who was born in 1729,was a surgeon for the Government, and served under President George Washington. The first of the TOWNER family in America, came from the Isle of Man, in 1687. Margaret (MC GHEE) TOWNER, wife of Charles TOWNER, was born in Essex County, New York in March 1828, and died in 1898.



George B. M. TOWNER, attended district schools and was reared on a farm, where he lived until 18 years of age. In 1881, he came to Muskegon, Micihigan, and began work as a clerk in the hardware store of Powell & Hovey. He continued in their employ, 7 years, and in 1889, purchased the business, now known as the TOWNER Hardware Company, of which he is president. Through enlargement, the business has become on of the largest hardware stores in the state of Michigan. Mr. TOWNER, who has served as vice- president of the National Lumberman's Bank, of Muskegon, since 1915, is a member of the following: Blue Lodge, F and A. M., and Chapter; Chamber of Commerce; Rotary Club; Citizens Historical Association (Indianapolis, Indiana); and Methodist Church (member, board of trustees). His hobby is hunting wild bees.



On September 26, 1888, George B. M. TOWNER married Gulielma TILLOSON, who was born at Glens Falls, New York, daughter of Dallas C. and Hanna Augusta (WING) TILLOSON, natives of New York state. Mr. and Mrs. TOWNER are the parents of 4 children; (1) Russell T., who is vice-president of the TOWNER Hardware Company. He married Rita JOHNSTON. Children: Elizabeth, Margaret, and George B. M. (II). (2) Martha, who is treasurer, and in chalrge of the china department of the TOWNER Hardware Company. (3) Dallas Kenneth, who is secretary of the TOWNER Hardware Company. He married Ruth SELEY. Children: Nancy Jane, Ruth Ann, and Tilson. (4) Florence, wife of T. T. BUCKLEY. They reside in Cambridge, New York. Children: Towner, William, Martha, and Gulielma.
