Rufe served in the Civil War with Battery E, 1st Illinois Light Artillery. He was wounded by a musketball that shattered his right hand, and was discharged in 1862. He received a pension beginning November 1862 of $4.00 per month, according to a list of pensioners from Pottawatomie KS, dated 1883 (found on the Internet at the Kansas GenWeb project). He is listed as an Illinois Civil War veteran, serving in company E, 1st IL Artillery.

They moved to St. Mary's Kansas in 1876, then on to Anselmo, Nebraska sometime after 1895 (when they were enumerated in the Kansas State census). Apparently, they owned two homes - one in Anselmo and the other in Gravette, AR. They were counted twice in the 1910 Census - once in each place!

His wife Julia Ann (Chilson) was a sister of Clarrinda Angelica Chilson, wife of Rufe's brother Isaac Newton.
