Jack "Sherman" was born in Yaruga in what is now Ukraine. At birth, he was named Yankel Shlakman (more specifically, Yankel ben Zolman). He changed his name to Sherman some time in the late 1940's.

He arrived on the ship, "Cuba" with his family on 14 February 1923 from Havana to Tampa. His sisters were the late Jean Sandra Schnitzer and the late Leah Mildred Corman. He had an elder brother named Ben who changed his name to Shepard.

He was a very dapper and handsome man.
