Samuel Junious Forrest, the eldest child of James Forrest and Freelove Dutcher Snow, was born October 17, 1830 in Boonville, Cooper Co., MO. Samuel spent the majority of his life in Ozark Co., MO. His siblings were: Robert, Eli Stedman, Nathaniel Green, Sarah, Catherine, Malinda, David Dutcher, and William.

On August 15, 1850, at the age of nineteen, Sam married Marinda Lantz, the daughter of Moses Lantz and Jerusha Graham. Their children were: Josephine, Eli Stedman, Elizabeth, Aurilla, James D, John P, Malinda, Melissa, Mary Etta, and George Burr.

Samuel served during the Civil War on the Union side enlisting October 18, 1861 in Company F, Phelps Regiment, Missouri Volunteers, commanded by Captain George W. Evans. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.
