family legend--her father was a pirate & went on voyage & left Clarissa with her aunts. From Mary Lou Kemp Cavenaugh--her mother, Virgie Britton, told her that the lands around (Elizabethtown?) NJ --deeded about Sir Humphrey Gilbert, half-brother to Sir Walter Raleigh.
According to Wayne Hadley: Sir Humphrey Gilbert was given an exclusive right by Queen Elizabeth to plant colonies, so in a sense he had title to most of North America. He died without starting any colonies, and others were given leave to colonize.
Wife of Rufus, 56y.
